Present Simple
Habits, routines and facts. The -s for he / she / it, don't and doesn't.
10 topics from A1 to B1. Each one has a short explanation, the mistakes learners really make and exercises at five levels.
If you know your level, start there; if not, go from the beginning. The topics are ordered so that each one prepares the next.
Think of the order below as a course plan. Every topic page links to the previous and the next topic.
Habits, routines and facts. The -s for he / she / it, don't and doesn't.
What is happening now and temporary situations. am / is / are + -ing.
Finished past events. Regular and irregular verbs, didn't and Did.
Actions in progress at a moment in the past. was / were + -ing.
An event or an action in progress? when and while.
Experiences and the past linked to now. have / has + V3.
Finished time or connected to now? Decide with three questions.
Activities and durations up to now. have / has been + -ing.
Showing which of two past events came first. had + V3.
One event or two? Decide with three questions.
The topics work on a smartboard and on a phone. You can send the link as homework or use a topic as a ten-minute review at the start of a lesson.
Read the explanation and the mistakes together first, then do the exercises in pairs. Do the “Type it” level with books closed: there are no options, so students build the answer themselves.
Topics that compare two tenses at the same level (for example the past simple and the past continuous) are separate topics. Teaching each tense on its own and then moving to the comparison works best.
The list keeps growing. There is now a path from A1 to B1; the next topics will be the basic tenses, the future and other core structures.
