MINGLE EDITION

FACT OR FICTION | DYNAMIC TRIVIA & CLASS MINGLE GUIDE

Fact or Fiction is a collaborative trivia mingling game designed to stimulate active speaking and critical thinking in language classes. By questioning peers about interesting trivia statements and validating their accuracy, students are encouraged to use English in an organic, communicative setting.

Pedagogical Value of Interpersonal Mingling

Unlike traditional desk-bound exercises, a "mingle" activity requires students to move, locate new partners, and engage in multiple short dialogues. This setup lowers speaking anxiety (the affective filter) because interactions are brief and peer-to-peer rather than teacher-led. Students practice reading statements clearly, listening actively to partner hypotheses, and providing explanations in English.

Structuring Classroom Mingles with Fact or Fiction

To initiate the activity, project or distribute the tool. Each student is assigned to ask a peer the question shown on their screen. The peer guesses "Fact" or "Fiction," and the questioner reveals the explanation. If the guesser is correct, they receive a point. After the exchange, students swap partners and tap "Next Card" to generate a fresh prompt, creating a continuous flow of verbal practice.

Linguistic Scaffolding & Follow-up Options

Fact or Fiction accommodates A2 to B2+ groups. Teachers can encourage beginner students to use simple structures like "I think it is Fact because..." while advanced students can be tasked with debating the explanation or providing their own opinions on the trivia topic. As a follow-up, students can write a short paragraph about the most surprising fact they learned during the mingle.
