VISUAL STORYTELLER | CREATIVE IMAGERY & DESCRIPTIVE DISCOURSE
Visual Storyteller is an interactive prompts application that leverages evocative, unexpected imagery to stimulate spoken and written narrative creation. By displaying dynamic visual cards, the tool encourages language learners to interpret scenes, describe details, and construct imaginative narratives.
Developing Descriptive & Narrative Competence
The primary pedagogical target is descriptive language (adjectives, prepositions of place) and narrative coherence (sequencing events). Students learn to speculate on character feelings, setting details, and potential plotlines, mapping to CEFR levels A2 to C1. Visual prompts lower the language barrier by providing concrete references for speech.
Classroom Storytelling & Writing Projects
In the classroom, teachers can utilize these cards for collaborative storytelling. In groups, student A starts the story based on card 1, student B continues using card 2, and so on. The visual cards also serve as excellent prompts for quick descriptive writing journals, peer discussions, or vocabulary-building exercises targeting sensory descriptions.
Scaffolding Visual Interpretation
Beginners describe what they literally see (nouns and simple actions, e.g., "There is a dog. It is running."). Advanced students are challenged to speculate on the backstory, using modal verbs of possibility (e.g., "The character looks anxious, which suggests she might have...") and advanced adjectives to build mood.
