Survival Scenarios is a highly engaging problem-solving simulator designed to prompt active communication, prioritization, and consensus-building in English. By throwing students into extreme environments with limited supplies, the application forces learners to discuss, negotiate, and defend their choices in the target language.

Linguistic and Cognitive Development

This scenario-based learning model develops critical thinking, persuasive argumentation, and functional language. Students must utilize specific structures of negotiation, modal verbs of deduction (e.g. must be, might be, can't be), and conditional sentences ("If we choose the matches, we will be able to make a fire"). It targets CEFR B1-C2 speaking and reasoning skills.

Classroom Collaboration & Consensus Dynamics

The recommended workflow begins with individual rankings of survival gear. Students then form small survival teams to negotiate a single, unified list. Each team must present their rationale to the class, defending why certain items were prioritized. This peer-to-peer challenge prompts high-frequency output and forces students to use diplomatic counter-proposals.

Scaffolding and Adaptability

Lower-proficiency groups are supported with pictorial prompts and simple modal templates (e.g., "We need this because..."). Advanced classes can be given surprise events (e.g., a sudden blizzard or injury) midway through, forcing them to adapt their list and re-negotiate their survival strategy under pressure.
